Better farm data, better decisions: understanding natural capital on your farm.

Welcome to the Farming for the Future learning portal.

Natural capital, the soil, water, pastures and trees that quietly support a farm, does real work for the business, and it can be measured.

Here you'll learn what it is, why it matters to productivity, profit and resilience, and how better farm data helps farmers do more with the free gifts nature provides.

Farming for the Future's aim is for all farmers to have the information they needs to optimise nature on their farms to benefits from the free gifts of nature.

To do this we need to develop a common understanding, shared language and ways of measuring natural capital. This training portal aims to provide that basis, making natural capital information more accessible, consistent and useful for farmers, advisers and natural resource management professionals.

Through the learning modules on this site, you can learn natural capital concepts, why it is important for agriculture and society more broadly, and  how this information may be used in practical farm and landscape decision-making.

Natural Capital Foundations

Farmers have always known that healthy land makes for a healthier business.

This learning stream has eight short modules, each on a defined topic. They show how Natural Capital can be measured, valued, and put to work on a farm.

Each module takes no more than 20 mins.

In short, self-paced videos and some reading, you'll learn what natural capital is, why it matters to productivity, profit and resilience, and how to read what the numbers are telling you, all in plain language, no expertise assumed.

Ecological Data Collection

This is where natural capital measurement moves from the desk to the paddock.

Designed for NRM staff, ecologists, and technical practitioners, this stream walks through how an on-farm ecological assessment is actually carried out, from planning a field visit to collecting the data and turning it into meaningful scores.

It builds on the ideas in Natural Capital Foundations, so if you're new to natural capital, we'd suggest starting there first.

How to use this site

Choose the topics that interest you and work through the information modules at your own pace.

Each module may include a short presentation, downloadable slides and resources, information about the presenter and a small number of review questions.

Later on, you may also be invited to provide feedback or complete an evaluation to help the project team understand how we can better improve our presentation of this important information and to identify further topics of interest that we can cover.

If you would like to get in touch with the project directly, please email: hello@fftf.org.au
